What is a Dental Emergency?
Any dental problem that requires immediate care, such as saving a lost or damaged tooth or stopping ongoing oral bleeding, is considered a dental emergency. It’s always best to seek professional help as soon as possible, so we can help with the pain without causing further damage. Examples of dental emergencies are as follows:
- severe dental pain
- loosened or dislodged crown
- chipped, cracked, or broken tooth
- dental trauma
- knocked out or loosened tooth
- broken denture
- bitten or cut lip or tongue -trapped object between teeth
- toothache
- painful abscess in the gums or mouth
What should I do in a Dental Emergency?
The first step should always be to call our office or notify a friend to call and take you to the dentist. Once that is done, the next step depends on the emergency, here are our suggestions for each different emergency:
Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth: Place the unattached tooth in cold whole milk to preserve it and keep it hydrated before replacement. Rinse mouth gently with warm water and gently apply a cold press to reduce swelling.
Knocked-out tooth: Clean the root of the tooth by holding it at the tip of the crown and rinsing it gently. Be careful not to remove any tissue fragments. If the tooth cannot be placed and held gently in its socket, submerge the tooth in cold whole milk and take your tooth to the dentist within 30 minutes of the accident.
Bitten tongue or cut lip: Clean softly with cloth and apply cold press for swelling. When bleeding has subsided, rinse with warm salt water, or seek emergency services if bleeding continues.
Loose or dislodged crown: Local pharmacy dental cement can be used to place the crown temporarily, but patients must seek the help of a dentist in the matter of a few days. A crown may dislodge if caries or dental decay exist beneath the restoration.
Toothaches: Rinse with warm water and floss to remove any trapped food particles between the teeth. If this is too painful, or if there is any facial swelling or pus, seek dental assistance as soon as possible. For other cavities, inserting a small piece of cotton soaked in olive cloves may relieve some discomfort.
